Ceremonies at the End of Life

Sliding fee scale: $35-$50-$65

This workshop is an enrichment Module for Lay Chaplains and will also be of interest to Ministers and Ministerial Students. It focuses on ceremonies related to Medical Assistance In Dying (MAid), family-led and home funerals, and online memorials.

Facilitator:  Ellen Newman
Ellen is a former UU Lay Chaplain and is trained to offer the CUC’s compulsory introductory Lay Chaplaincy training “Designing Rites of Passage”.  She is also the Chair of the National CUC Lay Chaplaincy Committee.  She is a licensed funeral director specializing in green, natural and family-centered end of life care options

Rev. Pamela D. Estey, MDiv, CSCPChaplain, Spiritual & Religious Care, Dartmouth General HospitalAs the sole Spiritual Care Practitioner at Dartmouth General Hospital,  Rev. Estey has been involved with MAiD since it became legal, and has been involved at various levels; including providing rituals before, during and after the procedure; answering questions about what to expect; providing support to patients/family members/hospital staff; and screening for spiritual distress. 

Dawn Carson, Death Doula with Death Matters https://deathmatters.ca/Dawn Carson is a successful business owner, Death Doula, Community Deathcaring Educator, Funeral Coordinator,  and Advance Planning Consultant, Chair – Green Burial Nova Scotia . Dawn is dedicated to creating a culture of openness around living and dying well.

Deborah Luscombe, Death Doula with Death Matters https://deathmatters.ca/ Deborah Luscomb has a passion for bringing people together around difficult, but necessary conversations. In addition to hosting the Halifax Death Café and Final Curtain Films, she leads Advance Planning workshops, and acts as a Thanadoula and Funeral Guide, assisting during the transition and postmortem experience.
