High School OWL Weekend – Grade 10-12

Registration now open – until January 12, 2018.

PLEASE NOTE: The date of this training has been changed from Oct 20, 2017 to January 19 – 21, 2018. We apologize for any inconvenience caused.

Join youth and advisors from Ontario and Quebec for the Fall 2017 Our Whole Lives (OWL) Weekend at the Unitarian Congregation in Mississauga. The weekend includes facilitator-led sessions from the OWL curriculum, Saturday night youth-led worship, shared meals and lots of social time.

About OWL: Using a comprehensive approach, the Grade 10-12 Our Whole Lives program helps high school youth gain the knowledge, life principles and skills they need to express their sexuality in safe and life-enhancing ways. Focusing on honest and accurate information, the OWL weekend will address topics such as stereotypes and assumptions, self-acceptance and self-esteem, healthy relationships, consent, decision making, and body image. Read more about the OWL program here, or contact your congregation’s OWL committee or religious educator. You can also watch a great video by two youth who have participated in OWL (and find out why it’s WAY better than health class!).

REGISTER NOWClick here to go to the Registration Form.
Registration deadline: Friday, January 12, 2018 at midnight.

Cost: $45 per participant (youth and advisors). OWL facilitators do not pay a fee. We recommend that each congregation cover fees for adult advisors to attend.

  • Registration fee includes meals from Friday snack to Sunday breakfast, and accommodation at the church.
  • Payment by cash or cheque will be accepted on Friday of the event – please make cheques payable to the Unitarian Congregation in Mississauga. If possible, we prefer one cheque per youth group.

Our Whole Lives in Ottawa 2016-2017

OWLLike many congregations, here at the First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa, we are excited to be offering Our Whole Lives (OWL) sexuality education programming this year. The plan is to offer every level of OWL, in some capacity, over the next two years. We began this fall with twelve kids and their grownups signed up for the Kindergarten-Grade 1 class, and it is off to a fun start, with life-sized body pictures of each of the kids decorating our walls.

We hope to include some picture book alternatives to some of the (sparsely illustrated) stories in the curriculum, and adapt our language to include non-binary genders. We also plan to turn the discussions into games and activities, from sorting toys to role-playing sperm who compete to fertilize the egg first. We are lucky to have had some really innovative facilitators over the years whose notes offer great, active ideas, and whose creativity has provided amazing props, such as a knitted uterus, out of which we will birth a baby doll, and cut the red string umbilical cord! CUC Conference 2016: Bolder Ways of Being

What will be your peak moment of the CUC 2016 Conference in Vancouver? Will it be the inspiration of the Confluence Lecture? Will it be the joy of a mass choir raised in celebration at our Sunday worship? Will it be the provocative streams and workshops—from Cross-border Climate Change to an exploration of personal ministry? The smile on your face as you recognize scenes from your own church in the slideshow that will enhance the banner parade? Or maybe just the opportunity to network with Unitarian friends old and new?

Online registration is open now for the Conference “Bolder Ways of Being,” which will bring Unitarians from across the country to the UBC campus May 20-22. After April 30, registration in advance will be closed. Walk-in registration will be available on site once the conference begins. The special group rate for accommodations will end April 15th

Check out the Conference 2016 Website to find out about meal plan options and accommodation at the Gage Residence and make your reservations. Most program sessions and meals will be held in the award-winning new Student Union Building, The Nest. The conference website includes links to other Canadian Unitarian groups meeting on or near the weekend, as well as descriptions of the streams and workshops.

Sunday worship at the Chan Centre will feature the conference choir and special roles for young adults. The service will be followed by a multigenerational lunch and all-ages workshops in the afternoon. The awards banquet on Sunday night is included with full conference or Sunday-only registration.
