The Canadian Unitarian Council is heartbroken by the horrific attack at the Lapu-Lapu Day Block Party in Vancouver—a celebration of Filipino Canadian culture, resilience, and community. Our deepest condolences go out to the families and loved ones of those killed, and we hold in our hearts all those injured, traumatized, or grieving in the wake of this senseless violence. We also extend our gratitude to the first responders, healthcare workers, and bystanders who acted with courage and compassion amid the chaos.

This was meant to be a day of joy, unity, and the spirit of bayanihan—the Filipino tradition of collective care. Instead, a single act of brutality has left countless lives shattered. We stand in solidarity with Vancouver’s Filipino community and all those reeling from this tragedy.

In times like these, we are reminded of life’s fragility and community’s strength. We urge everyone to lean on one another, offer support where needed, and seek help if they are struggling.

Below are resources for those affected:

As Unitarians and Universalists, we affirm every person’s inherent worth and dignity and condemn violence in all forms. Let us channel our grief into action: by checking in on one another, rejecting hatred, and nurturing the bonds that sustain us.

In sorrow and solidarity,
Canadian Unitarian Council
