Mary Hailu – Refugee Support
Mary Hailu is a dedicated and compassionate person who has been working in refugee sponsorship and settlement support for over 5 years. As a refugee herself, she understands firsthand the challenges and struggles that refugees face when trying to rebuild their lives in a new country. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Addis Ababa University, and she is deeply interested in social justice & human rights which led her to focus on refugee settlement.
Mary started working with refugee settlement organizations, providing counseling and support services to newly arrived refugees. She quickly became proficient in demonstrating a keen ability to connect with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds, and great understanding of the unique challenges that refugees face in their resettlement.
Over the years, Mary has worked with hundreds of refugees, helping them navigate the complex process of resettlement, assisting them in completing different government documents, advocating for them and providing them with the tools and resources they need to build new lives for themselves and families.
In her role as the refugee support staff at the CUC, she is responsible for providing support and resources to sponsors, which include:
- Coordinating the refugee sponsorship application process from start to finish by working closely with sponsors
- Providing guidance and support to sponsors to help them make informed decision about their sponsorship process
- Ensuring that sponsored refugees receive the support, resources and tools they need as they adjust to their resettlement in their new country
- Informing sponsors, through orientation sessions, the available settlement services in their location and follow up on the support provided to sponsored refugees
