The Eighth Principle

“We, the member congregations of the Canadian Unitarian Council, covenant to affirm and promote:

Individual and communal action that accountably dismantles racism and systemic barriers to full inclusion in ourselves and our institutions.”

At a historic special meeting on November 27, 2021, Canadian Unitarian Universalists adopted an eighth Principle. It is a significant milestone, one that marks the first update to our principles since 1985, when the seventh Principle (affirming the interdependent web of all existence) was added.

This Sunday service was streamed live in February 2022, and focused on the 8th Principle. It was a Sharing Our Faith service, where congregations are encouraged to give generously to support growth initiatives within our faith community.

This video, 8th Principle: Canadian UU Experience describes the Canadian Unitarian Council’s journey to adopting an 8th Principle. The video was made for the Unitarian Universalist Association’s General Assembly conference in 2022, and provides explanations of the Canadian process for an American audience.
