Curtis was born in Toronto and grew up in the Ottawa area, where he and his family attended the First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa beginning in 1990. Curtis participated in Religious Education programming throughout his childhood, and has fond memories of playing after-church floor hockey in the NOW room downstairs. He was deeply engaged with the Ottawa Youth Group, coordinating and attending numerous regional youth conferences, and serving as Youth Board Member from 2001-2003. He also participated in setting up the first Senior High OWL (Our Whole Lives) weekends in 2004.

In 2005 Curtis moved to Montreal to study at McGill, where he completed a B.A. in German Literature and Religious Studies in 2010. He is currently pursuing a Masters of Divinity at the Montreal School of Theology, and serves as Youth Programs Coordinator for the Unitarian Church of Montreal.
